National Science Week 2024

Enjoy science events at Libraries Tasmania

National Science Week from 10 to 18 August is an opportunity to celebrate Australian scientists, foster an interest in science, and encourage younger people to become fascinated by the world we live in.

The Mobile Antarctic Classroom – presented by the Mawson’s Huts Foundation

The Mobile Antarctic Classroom is visiting selected libraries around Tasmania.

Whether you’re in kindergarten or retired, we’ve got something for you!

  • Play with magnets, pretend penguin eggs, and polarising filters.
  • Look at replica and genuine Antarctic artefacts.
  • Take a photo in our snow tent.
  • Chat with our staff about your Antarctic history and science questions.

Listen to a world of wildlife noise with CallTrackers

Curious about the hidden world of wildlife sounds at night?

We’re inviting you to embark on a journey of exploration through the CallTrackers project: your gateway to the wonderland of nocturnal wildlife calls.

From September to March, you can borrow state-of-the-art sound recorders from libraries across Tasmania (including Launceston, Smithton, Devonport, St Helens, Whitemark and Hobart).

These gadgets are a window into the secrets of different wildlife sounds. They also help to track changes in wildlife numbers and habitats over time. You’ll receive species identification suggestions the moment you upload your recordings to the Acoustic Pipeline website. It’s like having your own hidden wildlife guide.

Get started this August with National Science Week “Discover CallTrackers” workshops. Bookings are essential.
